Freeport School District has high expectations for student performance including students who demonstrate high academic potential, which is determined through a variety of assessments. The district offers opportunities for students to be in advanced learning classes in first grade through high school.

Freeport School District has a High Academic Potential Program (HAPP) for first through sixth-grade students who possess high academic potential. Kindergarten and Fourth-grade students are screened for this program using the online Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3), which is a culture-fair, nonverbal measure of ability where students rely on reasoning and problem-solving skills. The NNAT3, Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP), and teacher recommendations are used to determine eligibility for this program.

Freeport School District offers an Accelerated Placement Program, Honors Program, and a CollegeNOW Dual Credit Program. The district provides an Accelerated Placement Program (APP) so each student can develop to his or her maximum potential. Participation in the APP is open to all students who demonstrate high ability and who may benefit from the accelerated placement. Honor courses are designed for students who are above grade level in achievement test scores and in overall classroom performance. The CollegeNOW Dual Credit Program offers qualified junior students the opportunity to earn both their high school diploma and associates degree at the same time.
