• In response to the Childrens Mental Health Act of 2003, the Illinois State Board of Education developed and adopted the Illinois Social and Emotional Learning Standards. The State of Illinois drafted these standards in collaboration with the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership as well as the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

    The State of Illinois has recommended the integration of SEL standards into daily school practices by:

    • examining current systems and structures utilized in school to determine how SEL can be integrated;
    • aligning SEL standards to academic curriculum standards in developing class lessons;
    • promoting and lifting student voices to increase autonomy, relatedness, and SEL skill capability;
    • offer opportunities throughout the school day for students to practice SEL competencies.
